Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1922, Chuck led a long full life surrounded by family and many friends. He served in World War II as a Marine of the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre. Following his discharge, he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California. He was employed by American Smelting and Refining Company for 37 years. The last 27 years at the Mission Mine as the Mechanical Superintendent. Chuck was an avid hiker and camper making multiple trips to the Grand Canyon and other western locales. He enjoyed being out under the stars during the full moon. He was a devoted husband and father married for 47 years to the late June McClain. His parents, Harry and Letha McClain; son, Walter McClain; and granddaughter, Cara Newman preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Charlyn Newman (Don), son, Patrick McClain (Ilene), daughter-in-law, Wendy McClain, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family would like to express our gratitude for the care Chuck received from the management and staff of Cottage 5 during his residence at Pacifica Memory Care. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Nature Conservancy.
A private inurnment will be held at East Lawn Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
