Charles William Dumm
4/17/1923-6/25/2020
Born in Casper, Wyoming to Franklin & Margaret (Schenk) Dumm. Charles lived most of his 97 years in the California Bay Area communities of San Leandro, Oakland , and Castro Valley.
He and his wife Gwendolyn (nee Paul) met in jr. high and attended high school together.
He enrolled at College of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. After being drafted to serve in the Army during WWII in the Philippines, he returned to San Leandro and married Gwen. He went to work as an electrician for Western Electric. In 1949 he began his life time career as an electronic technician at the Lawrence Berkley Labs where he retired in 1989. He loved his work and colleagues. He often said , “I never regretted a day going to work! “
Charles and his family were very involved in Laurel Methodist Church and San Leandro Methodist where they made many dear, lifelong friends. He was also a Mason and in Knights Templar. He was a voracious reader. He loved science fiction and science, especially the Space Program! He was an amateur radio operator most of his life. His handle was “ Charlie How Uncle Charlie King”. He built his own radio equipment and computers and was always fascinated by new technology that developed over his lifetime. He enjoyed being outdoors, sports events and family camping in Yosemite and other parks in northern California.
Charles was a devoted husband and a loving, supportive dad for over 70 years! He is survived by his only daughter Gail Paulin (Jim Carlson) of Tucson, a cousin Penny Wilkes (Michael), a nephew, Donald Dumm (Susan Payne) their sons Will and Wes, a niece Melissa Bowler(Tim) their children Justin, Ivy, Jake, Sam and Holley, Grand nephews Tyler (Lucie), Ryan (Mollyrose) and their son Mitty. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Gwendolyn, his brother Franklin, his nephew Roger, and son-in-law Kenneth Paulin.
Many thanks to the kind staff at Broadway Proper in Tucson where he lived the last 4 years of his life to be near his daughter. He had many lifelong friends who enjoyed his sense of humor and good nature. His life exemplified the gifts of patience, love and kindness. He will be dearly missed by those who love him and welcomed home by those long lost. No services are scheduled at this time.
