Carmen grew up in Owensville, Indiana and was a 1966 graduate of Owensville High School. She worked for 20 years as a respiratory therapist for Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. She moved to Tucson in the late 1980s where she worked in home health and medical supplies marketing and sales.
Carmen grew up in the First Christian Church of Owensville and was baptized into Christ on September 10, 1961. When she moved to Evansville, she transferred to Bethel Temple Church. During the past few years, she attended Pantano Christian Church near her home in Tucson.
Carmen was an avid University of Arizona Wildcats basketball fan. One of her favorite places to visit was the pioneer boomtown of Tombstone. She had a deep appreciation for the paintings of acclaimed Arizona artist Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia, and it was not uncommon for her to take out-of-town guests to the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun Museum. One of her favorite traditions included attending the Native American Heritage Month Social & Craft Market and Pow Wow. She was a gracious hostess and tour guide to visiting family and friends. Carmen maintained many close, long-time friendships in Tucson and southwestern Indiana.
In addition to her parents, Carmen was preceded in death by her siblings, Phyllis (Newton) Murray and Dan Newton; nephews, Joe Paul Newton and Mike Newton; and boyfriend, Mike Rosen.
Carmen is survived by her brother, Joe Newton; sister-in-law, Cynthia Newton; niece, Jill (Newton) Thill; and nephews Steve Murray, Brent Murray and Bart Newton, as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be missed by all of her family and friends.
Carmen’s family and friends are very appreciative of the excellent care she received from the medical team within St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson.
