Bert Withrow was born to Emma May Turner Withrow (1905-1988) and Thomas Richard Withrow (1879-1932) on September 17, 1925, in a small town of Geff, Illinois. He was blessed to have 3 sisters: Louella (1930-1930), Mildred Cooke (1922-2008), Clara Morlan (1923-1995); and 1 brother Vincent Peterson (1927-1975).
Bert lived in Illinois for most of his long life. This is where he grew up on a farm working with the animals and in the fields. Later, Bert volunteered to sign up for the US Military and was proud to serve our country in the US Navy. When he returned from the Navy, he met a lovely Veda Cariens whom he married and had 3 very loving children: Leslie Lew Withrow (Carmen Calvillo), Paula Gregory (Eric Shelman), Bill Withrow (Lynda Withrow). He was happily married to Veda for nearly 54 years until her passing in 2001.
He was employed at Rockford Bolt and Steel for over 50 years. Bert was a Godly man who showed his love for the Lord by teaching his children the way and setting a real example for them. He was the superintendent of First General Baptist Church for many years. He also attended and volunteered his time at First Assembly of God, where he was a member for many years.
Bert leaves behind 3 loving grandchildren: Shane Gregory, Zackery Withrow (Katelyn Withrow), Jamie Withrow. Bert was blessed to have spent the last 2 years of his life in Tucson with his children and grandchildren. He was known for telling his family to "Go home and enjoy your family. I love you all!"
Bert is especially known for being a huge Cubs baseball fan throughout his life, as he was so excited to watch them finally win the World Series Championship in 2016! Baseball brought him much joy, but was nothing in comparison to his love for spending quality time with family. Birthdays were always an exciting time of year and he loved to say, "You have a birthday coming up soon don't you!"
Bert will truly be missed by all!
His funeral will be performed by Pastor Lamar Lovett on October 3rd, 2023, at East Lawn Palms Mortuary & Cemetery, 5801 East Grant Road Tucson, AZ 85712. Preceding the ceremony, there will be a luncheon after the service at one of our father's favorite places, Golden Corral on Thornydale, at 1:00 PM.
