Deacon Bert Dixon was born August 4, 1924 in Henderson, Ky. He is the eldest of two children born to Bertrum Dixon, Sr., a coal miner from West Virginia and Inez Woolfolk Dixon from Henderson, Ky. He grew up with his sister Dorothy Mae Dixon-Walton and many cousins.
Bert migrated to Chicago, IL as a teenager where he attended Du Sable high school. In high school he developed a interest in carpentry which he fell in love with and continued to do as a job and as a hobby. In 1943 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he achieved the rank of PFC. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Bert being Bert just didn't have enough of the Army life then reenlisted to do an additional tour of service and was deployed to Germany. Stationed in Germany he worked with the Army Signal Corp. He was injured when stringing wire for the Army Command Communcations and spent a year in England in a military hospital. Upon his return to the states he was hospitalized for a year doing recovery and rehab. He was honorably discharged in 1947. After leaving the military he was employed by NATICO in Chicago, IL until he retired in June 1980.
Bert married Gloria Hamilton in October 1947 and to that union a daughter was born, Carol-Ann Dixon-Grace.
Bert later married Eula Mae Jackson in May 1972 in Chicago, IL.
Bert accepted Christ at an early age while attending Faith Temple COGIC, Chicago, IL. He later became a deacon under the tutelage of Elder Lloyd Brown.
Bert was devoted to God and loved his family and friends. He was a man of dignity and well-loved and well-respected by everyone who knew him. He never “met a stranger.” He enjoyed fishing, carpentry and just tinkering in his garage.
Bert lived in Dolton, IL until February 2010, when he and his wife decided to move to Tucson, AZ.
In March 2018 with friends and family present, He was awarded certificates “Thanking Him for His Service in The Army” and “The Beatitudes of Americans Who Served.” He was also given a “Service Pin.”
He is survived by his devoted bride of 46 years, Eula Mae Dixon, his sister, Dorothy Walton, three children, Carol-Ann Dixon-Grace, James E. Jackson and Denise M. Jackson, four grandchildren, Terry T. Grace, Jr., LaRessa Brown, LaVar E. Jackson and Kewuan D. Jackson. Also left to cherish his memory are several great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Deacon Bert Dixon was a faithful member of Greater South Park COGIC under the tutelage of Superintendent Alvin J. Mitchell.
On Monday, May 7, 2018 the Lord called Bert home, “WELL DONE, MY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT.”
