ARMINDA FLORES (80) passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at her home in Tucson, Arizona. She was born to Antonio and Jacinta Maldonado Flores on February 12, 1942 in Mercedes, Texas. She was a loving and devoted sister and aunt and her greatest joy always was being around her family. She was affectionately called “Mindy” or “Mimi” by her family and friends.
Arminda graduated from Mercedes High School in 1961. She graduated from Pan American University in 1965 with a Bachelor Degree in Liberal Arts.
She began her teaching career by teaching Spanish and English in Cotulla, Texas in 1965 and moved to the Mercedes Junior High School in 1966. In the summer of 1970 she moved to Tucson, Arizona and began teaching at Madge Utterback Middle School where she met and taught with her longtime friends John and Mercy Rhodes. Later she moved to Gridley Middle School and then to Cholla High School where she retired in 1996. During her years in Tucson, Arminda attended The University of Arizona (U of A) and worked on her Master’s Degree. Arminda had also completed courses in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico with its affiliation to the U of A.
Arminda was an avid conversationalist. She enjoyed reading, teaching, traveling, watercolor painting and going out to lunch with her retired teacher friends.
Arminda was preceded in death by her parents and brother Arnulfo Flores. Arminda is survived by her sister Alicia Flores Cavazos of Mercedes, her brother Arturo Flores of Mercedes, her sister Antonia Flores Garza of Mercedes, her brother Arnoldo Flores (Alicia Wisner) of La Feria, Texas, and her sister San Juanita Flores Carreon (Jose Carreon) of Havelock, NC. Also, nieces and nephews Gloria, Pedro Jr., Ricardo, Marta, Alma, Belinda, Jacinta, Arturo, Eduardo, Jorge, Perla, Andrew, Cyndi, Jaime, Christina, Adina, Barbara, Patti, Christobal, Alisa, and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Arminda will be interred at the East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5801 East Grant Road, Tucson, Arizona, 85712.
A celebration of life will occur in Mercedes, Texas at a later date to be announced.
