Alan was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin during the Great Depression on March 6, 1930, to Ed and Verna Koeneman. His parents were poor tenant farmers, but hard-working good people. Alan joked about his life on the dairy farm cleaning up gutters behind the cows as “all up from there!”
After high school and a couple years of college, he enlisted in the army and spent three years during the Korean War becoming an army tank officer, Second Lieutenant. During this time, at age 21, he was in a serious accident which sent him through the windshield of an army jeep. It left him with 55 stitches, a concussion, and the left side of his face paralyzed until the nerves thankfully grew together again, plus 2 years in and out of hospitals for plastic surgery.
After the war ended, Alan ran a TV and appliance store in Evansville, WI which led him to meet Connie in 1956 with her four young half- Mexican children in tow from a previous marriage. Despite the societal norms of the time, Alan and Connie were married in 1960, moved to a 5 acre country home on a private lake in Stoughton, WI, and added two more children to the blended family. The family business grew to four stores, but eventually ended in the credit crunch of 1966.
After this, Alan started selling securities, and a few months later had his own agency and later corporation. As top producer for the company over 20 times, Alan and Connie were able to travel the world on trips he had won seeing such places as Hawaii, Bermuda, Panama, Brazilian, Mexico, North Africa, and six trips to Europe.
Although he was considered successful in the eyes of the world, Alan spoke of never feeling satisfied or at peace with himself or others until he became a Christian in 1974 shortly after a fuel oil delivery man had reached out to him and a couple years after Connie. Alan and Connie and the two youngest girls moved to Tucson in 1979 which again turned his business upside down. Despite growing up and being confirmed Lutheran, Alan admitted he never looked to God and the Bible as his instruction manual for living life before and credited God for using financial struggles to get his attention and capture his heart. His faith and sharing it with others became his priority from then on.
Alan became involved in CBMC and later Full Gospel Businessmen, serving for years as Chapter President, Field Representative, and AZ National Director. He started the God Mobile Program used at the fairgrounds in Tucson and Phoenix. He continued to work out of his home office as financial advisor/stock broker until retirement.
Alan always had a love for the beautiful outdoors which included waterskiing, snowmobiling, snow skiing, and hiking. He skied on Mt Lemmon into his seventies and went hiking up until his last several years. He was proud of never living in the city and was able to live in his own home to the end of his days.
>> Alan was predeceased by his parents and wife Connie of over 62 years. He is survived by his brother Jim Koeneman; daughters Pam Avery, Lori Barbour (Mark); stepchildren Mike Martin, Ritchie Martinez (Glenda), Cherri Goerlitz ( Richard), Cathy Giddley; 11 grandchildren; multiple step great and great-great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Hope Church Tucson, 3353 N Houghton Rd, 2pm Saturday October 26th, 2024.
