Mr. Overall attended schools in Dallas, Kerrville and Abilene, TX and finished High School in Baltimore, MD in 1942. He was inducted into the Army of the United States in March 1943. He left active duty in the Army in September 1946, and then served in the Army Reserves until April 1953. He played the trumpet in many venues including dance bands in Baltimore, the Army, Austin, and Atlanta. At one time he was the principal trumpeter in the Atlanta Concert Band. He graduated from the University of Texas with honors in 1949, and attended Graduate School for one year. He worked as an Accountant in Corpus Christi, Houston, and Austin, TX, in Huntsville and Montgomery, AL, and Atlanta, GA. He held CPA Certification in Texas and Georgia. He retired in July 1989 from M.T. Overall & Associates, the corporation he formed in 1978 with his wife, Mary. He made his living practicing accounting, but his true passions in life were serving the Lord, playing the trumpet, and loving his family and friends.
Mr. Overall married Mary Louise Moses in June 1947. They were married for almost 51 years. She pre-deceased him in June 1998. Tom and Mary and their two daughters were members of Briarcliff Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Tom served as a deacon. He was inducted into The Gideons International in December 1998. He married Gloria Saunders in October 2000, and she pre-deceased him in October 2008. Mr. Overall lived in his home in Atlanta for 52 years before moving to Lilburn in 2013 to live with his daughter Kathy and son-in-law David.
He is pre-deceased by his brother Robert E. Overall. He is survived by his brother William F. Overall of Austin, TX, daughters Marilyn O. Gibbs and Katherine O. Bridgers (David), grandchildren Laura Miller (Andrew), Barrett Gleason (Patrick), Tyler Bridgers (Lauren), Emily Benson (Ben), Allison Bastecki (Chris), and great grandsons Thomas Harrigan Gleason and Clayton Gibbs Miller. As the head of the family he served as a wonderful role model for how life should be lived. He believed that there was no reason to worry about things that there was no control over. He said, “Let go and let God”. He was called Daddy Tom by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was loved and adored by them.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Faati Arthur for the wonderful long-term care that she has given to Mr. Overall. We also thank Denise Walker, Carla Donzo and the caregivers from Compassion Home Care for their help in caring for Daddy Tom.
