Dunwoody. Mrs. Lawing leaves her husband of over 75 years, Wendell Sr, and a son
Wendell Jr (Mike). She was preceded in death by her second son Jimmy.
Mrs. Lawing was the second of four children of the late Vernon and Mamie Mimms
of Chattanooga. She has one surviving sister, Drucilla Igou of Memphis, TN and numerous
nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. Lawing was married during WWII (1943) and endured Wendell being MIA and a
prisoner of war in Germany. Upon his return, they moved to Atlanta, GA in 1945 as Wendell attended
Georgia Tech and they attended the Baptist Tabernacle, downtown Atlanta for many years.
She was a Children’s Sunday School teacher, supervising the Beginner’s department for many years.
She was one of first CDC employees, being an executive secretary to the late Dr. Carl Mohr
but stopped her career in 1953 to have and nurture her two children. She returned to work some 12-15
years later at the Georgia School Book Depository, working for two publishing company sales
executives during her tenure before retirement in 1984. She and Wendell stayed very active during
their retirement and when the Baptist Tabernacle ceased in 1991, moved to the Briarlake Baptist
Church, which they attended for many years to come. Services for Mrs. Lawing will be held
