June 14, 1921 – December 25, 2016, World War II Veteran, Georgia Tech graduate, devoted husband and father. Mr. Meek was predeceased by his first wife, Edith Crews Meek; son, Ryan Meek; brothers, James Meek and Richard Meek; sister, Frances Wilson, and parents, James and Myra Meek. He is survived by his second wife, Jane Ownbey Meek, Decatur; sister Myra (Linwood) Zoller, Gainesville; son, Vance R. (Betty) Meek, Salisbury, NC; daughters, Rhonda (Wylie) Quillian, Peachtree City, Cathy Keeney, Sandy Springs; Jane’s children, Joseph (Amy) Ownbey, Tucker, Patricia (Daniel) Tamez, Rowlett, TX, and Diane (Gilbert) Cribb, Suwanee; grandchildren, Marie (Will) Daehn, Daniel (Micah) Quillian. Matthew (Beth) Quillian; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Eli Quillian and Talia Daehn, and nieces and nephews. He was born in Austell, GA, where his father worked as a businessman and Baptist pastor. Mr. Meek graduated from High School in Gainesville, GA. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for almost four years with the “Greatest Generation,” including serving in the European Theatre as 1st Lieutenant leading an Ammunition Company. After returning home from the service, he completed his education. He worked in Sales & Marketing for several companies and retired from Commonwealth Aluminum in 1986. A Christian and a lifelong Baptist, Mr. Meek served faithfully in different roles, including teaching Sunday School. He played the piano in Nursing Homes for Prime Notes, a church volunteer choir. Special thanks to devoted caregiver, Franco Casimir, to Visiting Angels, and to family and friends, for their love and support during Mr. Meek’s final years.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 28. at 2:00 pm.at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, Decatur, GA, where Mr. Meek has been a long-time member, with Rev. Larry Burgess and Rev. Fred Pitts officiating. The family will receive friends at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church at 1:00 pm preceding the funeral service. Interment at Floral Hills Cemetery, Tucker, GA.
