Jack Stansell - 86 of Tucker GA, passed peacefully in his sleep at his home on Dec. 17, 2019. At the time of his death he was surrounded by his wife Sue Price Stansell and children Jeff, Steve (Judy) and Christie.
Jack was born on May 18, 1933 in Calhoun, GA to Pluma and Arbie Stansell. Jack was raised in a faithful Christian home and he was a devoted and loving disciple of the Lord for each of his 86 years. Among his many accomplishments, Jack was a Mason in good standing for 50+ years, a Boy Scout Troop leader, PTA president and Little League baseball coach. He loved sports, vacations with family at the lake and beach, and traveling to new places with his wife Sue.
Jack’s family moved to Atlanta where he attended and graduated from Bass High School Class of 1951. Jack started working for Southern Bell after high school and would eventually retire with 37 years of dedicated service. Shortly after beginning his career with Bell, Jack answered his Country’s call and joined the Navy where he served 2 years of active duty during the Korean conflict. He returned to Bell in 1954 and attended night school at Georgia State for 1 year. Shortly after his return from the Navy, he met and fell in love with his soulmate, O’keefe High School beauty Sue Price. Jack & Sue were married in 1956 and spent 63 wonderful years together raising 3 children, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. During the early years, Jack and Sue galvanized lifelong friendships with many high school friends who they saw regularly and stayed close to for all their 63 years together. Jack always said “a man is lucky to have 1 or 2 close buddies that he can always count on.” (Thanks Gayle and Dick!)
After retiring from Southern Bell (AT&T) in 1985, Jack stayed busy by working several jobs, all of which he referred to as “getting paid to do things I like”. He drove a school bus for Dekalb County (including many Tucker High School sports events), marshalled at a golf course, umpired high school and college baseball (loved “the game”), ushered for the Braves (a genuine superfan), and was a stands manager for Georgia Tech football and basketball (while sending his 2 sons there).
In spring of 1980, Sue and Jack bought a vacation home on Lake Sinclair which became and still is the center of many outings and activities with family and friends. While at the Lake, Jack taught 3 generations of Stansell’s and McConaghy’s to “love the water”. Fishing, swimming, skiing, boating and fish cookouts were always among Jack’s list of favorite things to do right up until his last weeks. Jack truly lived an “American Dream” life, not always easy, but always rich in Family, Friends and Faith.
Jack is survived today by his wife, Sue Price Stansell, Sister Joan (Bill) Mills, Sons Jeff and Steve (Judy) and Daughter Christie (Paul) McConaghy. Grandchildren: Kristen (Jason) Stott, Megan, Michael (Ashley), Matthew (Cheyenne), Morgan, Jessica, Lauren, Sean and Kevin. Great-grandchildren: Jackson, Wesley and William. Also many beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded by beloved sisters Louise and Mary, Daughter-in-Law Kathy, grandson Daniel and great-granddaughter Maria.
