Sgt. David Michael Cothran was born on January 20, 1962, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Blanche W. Johnson and James Cothran. After graduating from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Mike, as he was affectionately called, followed in the footsteps of his beloved step-father, Willie T. Johnson, and entered into the United States Navy. During his time in the Navy, Mike found solace in his position as an Interior Communications Electrician and in competitive boxing. He served his country honorably until his discharge in 1988. Mike quickly started his new career as a Dekalb County Police Officer and proudly retired after 30 years of service.
On September 9, 1999, Mike met the love of his life, Nelly (Dora). After an awkward first date, he won her over with his charm, and the two became inseparable. They were married on May 30, 2008; grounded in the love and strength of God, they found refuge as they faced life’s challenges. Cherished memories and unforgettable laughs will forever resonate in the heart of his devoted wife.
Of all of his accomplishments, Mike was most proud of being a father to his three girls: Quentona, Jaquoya, and Shanice. He was loving, supportive, and selfless, the epitome of an outstanding father, and his memory will forever live in their hearts.
Mike confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior and joined Berean Christian Church Gwinnett under the pastorate of Dr. Kevin B. Lee. He was a dedicated servant and faithful parishioner.
Mike will be remembered not only for his kindness, compassion, and thoughtfulness but also for his natural trash-talking expertise –especially when it came to his team, the Baltimore Ravens.
He leaves to cherish his memory: His wife Nelly Cothran; daughters: Quentona Mattocks (Melvin), Jaquoya and Shanice Cothran; stepson: Juan Carlos Lopez; sisters: Patricia Mason (Willie), Gloria Smith, Gail Clegg (Lorenza), Chris Ward (Anthony), Toya, April, and Maisha Johnson; brothers: James Cothran and Preston Johnson; brother-in-law: Alfredo Lopez (Adriana) grandchildren: Blessid Snow, Micah Mattocks, Alexander Filipovic, Anthony, and Karla Lopez, and the newest addition Aria Hogan; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends, especially Darry Williams and Leavy Pearson.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents: Willie and Blanche Johnson; father: James Cothran; brothers: Antwan and Dwayne Cothran; and sister-in-law: Olga Lopez.
