Angelina Lai Yen Boey, age 33, of Atlanta, GA, passed away on December 9, 2021. She was the beloved daughter of David Boey and Diana Ko, sister of Angeline and Angela Boey, and aunt to her six-year-old nephew, James. We are unspeakably saddened by her death and the senselessness of how she was taken from us. We are told by police she was the victim of domestic violence murder-suicide – shot by her intimate partner who then took his own life. We know this is shocking because they had the appearance of a perfect couple. Though her life was taken in a tragic instant, we want to remember the beautiful moments she shared with her family and friends, leaving a legacy of warmth and everlasting love.
We want to take a moment to remember our sister and who she was as a person. Angelina was born in Malaysia, our baby sister, part of our trio of “Angels.” She was a sensitive, kind-hearted girl who loved easily. She made Georgia her home after our family moved to the U.S. permanently in 2003. She attended the University of Georgia and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Public Relations and Psychology. Most recently, she has worked close to 5 years at the Emory University Office of Admissions. She married her college sweetheart, Johnny Nguyen, on September 28, 2018. She came into her own as a generous and thoughtful woman who cherished time with her husband, family and friends. She enjoyed meticulously planning memorable events for others, taking eye-catching photographs, and traveling and learning about different cultures. She loved her role as a dog mom to her mini schnauzer, Russell. She had plans to embark on more life adventures and one day have children of her own.
We know that the circumstances surrounding her death are shocking, causing others similar distress and anguish. We believe Angelina would have wanted her death to help others, and to spread awareness of issues that are unseen but all too prevalent. According to The Violence Policy Center, in the U.S., there are 11 murder-suicides each week. Nine out of 10 killers use a gun. And so we urge you all that if you have guns in your homes, get rid of them. If you or someone you care about is overwhelmed with sadness, depression, or hopelessness, please seek counseling or call the National Suicide Prevention Line at 1-800-273-8255. Everyone deserves a relationship free from domestic violence, so if you need help, please visit The National Domestic Violence Hotline, thehotline.org, or call 1-800-799-7233.
We are devastated that we will no longer have our little sister to grow old with and to celebrate milestones in life. But what we do know for certain is that the love and joy she has spread in her life will overpower the tragic circumstances of her death. Angelina, though you have embarked on the next leg of this journey far too soon, we wish you love and peace in the afterlife. We bring you along with us in our hearts wherever we go and will join you again one day when the three angels can reunite again. You are our sister forever.
Love,
Angeline & Angela
