Charlene was born on July 27, 1930 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Horning) Freeborn. She graduated from Traverse City Central High School in 1948. On Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950, Charlene was wed to Robert Irving.
Although she had a career as a dental assistant for Dr. Kelly and Dr. Ellis, and later an office manager for Dr. Kaysserian, her family was her true passion. She was a loyal wife and mother. Charlene was very involved with her children’s and grandchildren’s school functions, always in attendance at sports games, concerts, and activities in which her family were involved.
As her children aged, Charlene spent her time bowling, playing cards with her Bunko Card Club, reading, watching television, and traveling with her friends and family. She collected Coca-Cola memorabilia and enjoyed listening to big band and country music.
Surviving Charlene in death are sons, Robert (Peggy) Irving and Mark (Sheryl) Irving; grandchildren, Joshua (Christen) Irving, Seth (Melissa) Irving, and Christel Irving; great-grandchildren, Bella, Joseph, Caleb, and Jacob; sisters Roberta and Nancy. Preceding her in death are her husband, Robert Irving, in 1987 and her parents.
Chars’ family wish to express their deepest appreciation to all of the staff at Pavilions, especially Aspen wing for their untiring care during her stay with them.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
