Gerald Wissinger was born on October 12, 1927 in Falls City, Nebraska to Walter P. Wissinger and Mildred M. Wissinger. Gerald entered into eternity on March 28, 2013 in Torrance. His family was by his side as he left this world to be greeted by his Heavenly Father. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Mildred Wissinger and his older sister Geneva Gilkerson. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Gertrude May Wissinger. She was the love of his life. He also leaves behind their four children, Pamela Fisher and her husband, Robin; Gary Wissinger and his wife, Pam; Geralyn Standifer and her husband, Karl; Marla Dodd and her husband, Glen. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, Jeremy Smith, Brandon Smith, Selena Knox, Jonathon Smith, Jennifer Dodd, Michael Dodd and Ciera Standifer, as well as four great grand children. He is also survived by his younger sister, Gladys McDermott and her husband Pat. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family.
Gerald was quite active in his high school years. He was a star basketball player, and his senior class president. He then served in the United States Navy, and then attended and graduated from Ashland College. He then began a career in the field of finance and continued for 37 years. He met the love of his life in his high school days. They dated and eventually married in 1948. They relocated to California in 1961 and resided in Torrance from then on. Gerald was involved at Torrance First Baptist church for over 50 years, where he taught Sunday school, served as a deacon, the church treasurer, and sang in the choir.
Gerald was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was always generous with his time, talents and resources. He was a great example of God’s love and mercy. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
