I worked with Bill at Gluskin.  In fact, I remember his first day. I was so sorry to learn of his passing. Bill was a genuine, caring family man. He was passionate about life, family, his adventures and rugby. I remember him fondly. Thinking of you all.

I find it difficult to use the past tense when writing a tribute to my friend Bill. His intelligence, curiosity, kindness and confidence made him a force of nature that I believed unstoppable. 

I was lucky to count Bill as a friend. I won’t forget him. 

My deepest sympathies to the Webb family. Bill was my first mentor in the investment business, a role he played for dozens of young Canadian finance professionals. He was a wonderful man, kind and generous with a big heart that was rivaled only by his booming, infectious laugh (just thinking of it now brings a smile to my face). His unbridled enthusiasm, diverse life experiences and genuine curiosity about the world and everyone he met made him one of the most interesting and engaging people I've ever known.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.


My earliest remembrance of Will was in Brantford.  His cousin Gail & I had come for a visit from London. We took Will & Robert to see the movie Jeremiah Johnson. Our seats were in the very front row and we got a closeup view with two curious, amazing little boys.
Nurtured by his dear Mom & Dad, it's no wonder Will grew up to be an accomplished young man,  and a proud husband & father.

I am so sorry to be writing this. I was shocked to learn of Wills' passing and send my deepest condolence. 
We first met in London (UK), in the 80s', as fellow explorers and of all the people I met in my travels, the only two I maintained contact with, were my two Canadian mates, William & Stephen.
I enjoyed meeting their families and friends back in Canada and having them visit NZ.
The very first two words Will said to me, when Steve introduced us were - "All Blacks" - that was the start of a long conversation.
I'll never forget his thunderous laugh, his sense of mischief, that jaw set in determination, but mostly how interested he was in people.
Such a terrific guy & a wonderful friend... it was a privilege to have known him.

My sincere condolences on the loss of your husband, father, brother and son.
I was deeply saddened to hear of Will's passing. I've known Will since 1982 when we attended Wilfrid Laurier together. We both did our work terms at IBM and shared a house in Toronto with John King and Scott Grondin. It was a hilarious time of student living by night and putting on a suit and trying to look professional by day.
After University I spent time with Will living and working in London, England, and after that, travelling in Nepal and China. They were some of the best years of my life, due in no small part to Will's friendship.
I will remember Will fondly for his excellent sense of humour and curiosity.
He will be greatly missed.

We had such an amazing group of friends in our university days. We left full of energy, promise and hope. In reading about Will's adult life,  it seems he lived large and full of love. Rest in peace Will.

Bill Webb welcomed us into the Canadian rugby community with open arms, deep insight and an unrelenting sense of humour.  We were privileged to introduce one of our sons to one of his sons, who struck a positive impression as a fine young person.  His achievements with the Toronto Arrows franchise are nothing short of remarkable and his loss will be felt deeply.  Gone too soon, he will be missed and we will do our utmost to uphold the legacy of his vision.  Our sincere condolences to the Webb family.

Bill was a significant figure in my life as a mentor, friend, and amazing man. I am so fortunate I had the opportunity to learn from and know Bill. He allowed myself and countless other Canadian rugby players to live out a dream that would never be possible without him.

I did not know Bill well, but like many at Laurier, I came into contact with Bill through the generosity of time and resources he devoted to promoting and championing WLU. For a number of years I organized an annual event at Laurier called 'Economic Outlook' and by extension some events in Toronto. One of these was in conjunction with Bill and Gluskin Scheff. Bill was sharp, engaging and an all round good guy.  In reading his obituary, I can think of no one who better lived up to Laurier's motto of "Leading lives of leadership and purpose". My sincere condolences to his family and close friends.

To Bill's family and friends, I was deeply saddened to hear of Bill's passing. As a senior leader at Laurier I met Bill on many occasions. He was an amazing alumnus, supporter, volunteer, co-op employer and champion for all things Laurier.  Please accept my personal condolences.  Bill's legacy will live on at Laurier. I first met Will Labour Day of 1982.  A booming laugh and sporting a BCI rugby jersey.   It was the start of 40 years of friendship.
Son, brother, father, husband, Will leaves behind a family mourning his loss very deeply.  My condolences to all of you.
Personally, the loss of my friend reveals itself in the quietest of ways, like when I need to share a silly thought with someone who gets it.  Will always got it.  His loss leaves an incredible void. He was many wonderful things to many people, 
but he will always be my Best Man.

The family of Bill:

I am one of the many rugby fans who will greatly miss Bill and his enthusiasm and support for the game. His quiet demeanor and soft way about him certainly was  a contrast to the sport he loved. I admired him as much for the person he was as for what he accomplished for rugby. A true leader in all respects.

I am but one of a huge number in Toronto and the wider global  rugby community that thank him dearly for all he gave to the sport. 

My very heartfelt sympathies to you in losing him.

I am going this week to the Rugby World Cup in France and will wear an Arrows hat and scarf to every game in his honour. (This trip is also why I will miss his funeral mass and reception. My apologies).

Bill was a wonderful man and one of the first people I met when I joined Gluskin Sheff. I had the privilege of spending a good amount of time with Bill during my tenure there and witnessed a great leader and friend to all, not to mention an exceptionally accomplished investor. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences to Bill’s whole family. He will be terribly missed. 

As a faculty member of Bill's alma mater, Wilfrid Laurier University, I witnessed the tremendous benefits that Bill bestowed on our students. Bill and his wife Agnes were very generous donors to our university and they funded a number of critical campus projects, Over the years, Bill also hired and mentored a whole generation of co-op students who went onto very successful careers in the investment industry.  As someone who taught many of these students, I saw first-hand the very positive impact that Bill's work as industry mentor had on these young people. 

Laurier has lost a great friend but Bill's legacy remains on our campus and in the lives of those he has touched.

My deepest sympathies go out  to Bill’s family. I worked with him for many years at GS+A.  I remember when he first arrived, and when he transitioned to the investment side. He was an absolute prince of a guy, just a lovely person with a really big heartfelt laugh. He will be missed by many.

I will always remember with fondness the conversations pitch side watching Stephen and James play, at times together and at times against the Nomads boys but all with the spirit of friendship that rugby brings. Bill gave so much to the game in Ontario and to young people through TIRF and his time with Toronto City. He will be deeply missed in the Ontario rugby family.  He was always someone who was kind to myself and those around me and made me feel welcome whenever we crossed paths.

After talking to my dad, I could not stop thinking about Bill Senior. Bill junior loved the man. I have great memories of both Bills at the Heuther.

I will miss his huge laugh/cough combo that could fill a room.  

Like John King, I can't think of Books without thinking of cigars, scotch, forearm handshakes, and his Scottish brogue exulting "clan Reid".

Books will be sadly missed.



We are so profoundly saddened by the news of Bill's passing. Bill was a good man - an exceptionally good man, actually - kind, supportive, charitable with both time and resources, and with a laugh that was special and came from deep within. His brave and stoic battle with prostate cancer - a disease from which my father also passed - is but another example of Bill's inner strength and character. The world is lessened with Bill's passing, but his memory will be strong and good, and will always be a blessing to those who knew him. We grieve for Agnes, James, Stephen and his father William, and pray that the love of family and dear friends will ease this difficult time. We send our love and heartfelt condolences to them all.

I want to express my deepest sympathies to the entire Webb family. Bill was a gem of guy and known as  one of the most respected guys of his generation in Canadian finance, a reputation that was entirely deserved. I think the fact that he had so many friendships - including my own - that lasted well beyond his years at GS+A and Bay Street is evidence of that notion. I was so happy for all the success and fun he had with the Arrows in recent years, knowing that he was pursuing his passion with the same temerity that was the hallmark of all he did. We are all better for knowing you Bill. Rest in Peace my friend.

From the moment I started Rugby vs Cancer in 2018, Bill was a huge supporter of our cause. Although from different generations when we found out we shared wearing the #9 jersey for the BCI Mustangs, every time we spoke it was as if we were old mates. That, was Bill’s way. I’m gutted by his passing. A huge loss for rugby… and an unimaginable loss for his family. The photo is of our Rugby vs Cancer jerseys that Bill paid for personally. Our slogan this year was,  “When you’re fighting cancer you’ve got to fight dirty!” We will continue the fight my friend. Rest in Peace.

My most sincere condolences to Bill’s family and friends . I knew “Will,” as he was called as a high school student at Brantford Collegiate I. & V. S. where I was his physical education teacher and coach. He was a brilliant student and athlete. Bill was one of the students who inspired me to be a better teacher and person.
