Veronica Smith, aka Eka, Ma St George and Nurse Cousin Eka was born May 15, 1927, in Boetica, Dominica, in the West Indies to parents Knight Pascal and Delsie Pascal.
On November 3, 2023, she passed away peacefully at Extendicare Guildwood, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her brother, Henry (Pato) Pascal, as well as her 9 children (Nelson, Avonelle, Celia, Josette, Allan, Richardson, Earl, Ruby and Ginta), 32 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren. In addition, she is fondly remembered by a large circle of cousins, nieces, and nephews, each of whom held a cherished place in her heart.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years George Smith.
Veronica was renowned for her outstanding work as a nurse and midwife, delivering numerous babies in the communities from Grand Fond to Delices. She was known for her visits to housebound community members, providing care and compassion. Her dedication, love, and passion shone through in all her responsibilities.
In August 1979, when the devastating Hurricane David struck Dominica, Veronica opened her home to provide shelter and support to the affected residents in the community. Her generosity and compassion were evident as her home became a place for conducting Catholic Church masses for the community, further highlighting her dedication to her community.
Later in 1979, Veronica and George migrated to Canada with their three youngest children and worked at Elmtree Nursing Home until her retirement.
Throughout her life, she held a deep love for God, her family, singing and dancing and had a special affection for WWF Wrestling.
Veronica's legacy of kindness, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to her profession and community will forever be cherished. Her love and warmth touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She will be missed and fondly remembered for her boundless love, generosity, and the countless lives she touched. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those she cared for.
As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman and mother, may we remember the love, strength, and resilience she shared with the world, and may her memory bring comfort and solace to those she leaves behind.
A special thank you is extended to the staff of Sheppard Village Manor and Extendicare Guildwood who lovingly cared and supported her.
