Va, Varlo, or Sister V was a woman of the highest calibre who loved The Lord, her family, and friends from the depth of her heart. She could never resist the opportunity to have a laugh with loved ones and friends, all the while regaling you with stories; told in great detail! She was fiercely independent and strong-willed, and those traits showed itself in every area of her life. Once she embraced you, you had a friend for life, someone who you could depend and rely on, always.
Varlo’s strength is what helped build the family that stands in her footprints today. She left Jamaica to emigrate to Canada which promised her a better life. Becoming a Nurse at Sick Kids was an honour she wore with pride, well past retirement. Retirement for Varlo did not mean she walked off into a sunset but rather that she reinvented herself yet again. She was a devoted member of the St. Paul’s Anglican Church community, singing in the choir, attending social events and being at church EVERY Sunday regardless of what would come. Her faith was as strong as her will.
Our grandmother was charming, vibrant, kind-hearted, and generous! Her courage to immigrate to a new and strange country is a testament of how her family came first, in all ways, and in all things. Her love for us will remain, for the rest of our days, unmatched; and we feel honoured and blessed that she will continue to love and guide us. Thank you all for your kind words, love, understanding, and support.
Love,
Karen (Donnie, Nicholas, and Alexander)
Brent (Belinda and Aaliyah)
Brandon (Maria, Xavier, and Isiah)
