Nimshan Bebaayajiiwaat (He Who Travels With Dogs)
May 3, 1942 – May 4, 2024
Terry was a good man who walked this beautiful earth for 82 years with kindness, generosity and compassion, and for the last 35 years, with a dog or two by his side. In doing so, he made this world a better place for people who knew him and loved him.
Born in London, England to an English father and an Irish mother, Terry was the youngest of ten children. He had a stint in the Royal Air Force and was stationed in Cypress in the 1960s. He later trained as an actor and teacher at the Rose Bruford College. Upon graduation in 1968, Terry pursued his career as an actor, director and theatre arts teacher with a passion. He worked in stage, film, radio, and television.
He emigrated to Canada in 1973, settled in Toronto and continued working as an actor and director. He taught theatre arts at various places including Seneca College where he directed Man for All Seasons.
In the mid-1980’s he left acting and became a photographer, spending time in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru to document the people and the impact of imperialism on their lives. It was in Mexico that he enrolled in an immersion program that made him a fluent Spanish speaker. He was involved in the solidarity movement, seeking justice for people in the developing world.
Terry married Barb Nahwegahbow in 1990. Together, they indulged their love of dogs and Terry was predeceased by seven beloved dogs – Bonzo, Fred, Puff, Bon, Zoe, Snack and Charlie. He leaves behind, along with his wife, a grieving little Yorkie named Chloe.
Terry was gifted with an Anishnaabe name, Nimshan Bebaayajiiwaat (He Who Travels With Dogs) that honours his relationship with his four-legged friends. He was quite pleased that he was able to pronounce it perfectly.
Terry was a good man, a kind man, a generous man who loved dogs. What better way to be remembered?
A celebration and honouring of Terry’s life will take place on Sunday June 2nd, 2024 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at 765 Queen Street East (Ralph Thornton Community Centre). Friends, family and loved ones are welcome to attend. The building is accessible. Food will be served.
Donations may be made to the Toronto Humane Society in Terry’s memory.
