beloved husband of Colleen Mulloy, died of heart failure – at sea, on his final adventure, a transatlantic crossing which featured good things such as sun, fine food and drink, and pleasant company. Terry died, as he would have wished, having fun!
Having reached 80 years of age, Terry lived 10 years longer than he had ever expected to, with his long history of cardiovascular disease. After his first heart attack at the age of 48, followed by quintuple bypass surgery in 1992, nothing interfered with his relish of life. A natural athlete and sportsman, he enjoyed windsurfing, fishing, cross-country skiing, golfing, and curling. These last two activities involved great camaraderie with groups of friends and provided years of pleasure both pre- and post-retirement. A social man, Terry loved people, and he was a long-time member of the Leaside Curling Club and a regular at Don Valley. A patient, deliberate person, Terry was a competent handyman, a keen bridge player (a family trait), and although a man of plain tastes, displayed grace notes such as an appreciation of classical music and a knack for storytelling, both oral and written.
At the age of 19, Terry entered the seminary of Scarboro Foreign Missions and after years of study was ordained a priest in 1968. He lived for 12 years in the Brazilian Amazon, engaged in community building, social justice issues, and ministering to 17 small communities along the Amazon. Returning to Canada in the 1980s, he served on SFM's council, performing mission visitations worldwide and helping to maintain the society's main house and property. He embarked on a process of self-examination which led him out of the priesthood, but not the Church. After a six-year stint as a project manager for commercial construction, Terry met Colleen (at a church dance!). They married three years later, eventually moving into the O'Sullivan family home in Leaside. Terry returned to pastoral work as a lay pastoral associate at two Toronto parishes (Holy Name and St. Gabriel's) until he retired in 2001. Upon retirement, Terry conducted marriage courses at St. Gabe's, then taught confirmation classes and acted as a lector at his home parish of St. Anselm's until his diminishing eyesight precluded such activities. But Terry had many years of enjoyment with his golf and curling, and he and Colleen had wonderful vacations in Europe, Asia, South America, Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, and the USA. A man of faith and no regrets, Terry never feared death. He went to meet his God, and his spirit will visit the Prelacy of Itacoatiara in the Brazilian Amazon.
Terry will be missed by his siblings Michael O'Sullivan (Marilyn) and Nancy LoPresti (Joel), in-laws Sheila & Brian Leggett, and extended family, including loving nieces & nephews, and will be remembered by his great-nieces & great-nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anselm's Church, 1 MacNaughton Road, Toronto on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 10:00 am. Interment of his cremated remains will take place privately at Mount Hope Cemetery, where he will rest with his parents Michael and Margery, and sister Patricia.
