It is with deep sadness that Richard Shaw passed away on July 3rd, 2023 at the age of 58. He is survived by his loving children Robert and Katherine, their mother Donna, his granddaughter Natalie and his siblings Chris and Diane.
Richard was a wonderful person. He was gentle and a gentleman. Hardworking and honourable.
He loved sports. Lots of sports -- both as a participant and horizontal on his sofa. He was both an avid and unskilled golfer (Quite an achievement!) He played softball with a seniors’ group, proudly noting he was the youngest on the team, yet he was old enough to pull his groin on numerous occasions (Not sure we can include this in his list of accomplishments...) There is an unsubstantiated rumour that he did yoga… If anyone has physical proof of this, please share.
Richard was a voracious non-fiction reader, mostly history and politics. However, his curious mind necessitated that he google all references he did not understand so it could take him days to read but a few pages. Not sure he ever enjoyed a real "page-turner".
And let's not forget his jokes, which arguably lacked maturity, however his technological skills really revealed his age. But in the end, we learned that you can teach an old dog new tricks and thank the Pegasus Animal Sanctuary for helping him reconsider his carnivorous ways.
We will miss him every day; His wonderful laugh, quirky sense of humour, reliability, and gentle ways.
SERVICE
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 20th from 11am to 3pm at Royal Ashburn Golf Club, 995 Myrtle Road West, Ashburn Ontario.
Family and friends will share their memories starting at noon.
Richard was a casual guy, so casual attire is encouraged.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable donation to either of the following organizations who were close to Richard’s heart:
Pegasus Animal Sanctuary - Port Perry, Ontario
Richard visited Pegasus on a number of occasions and gave donations. It was here that he began to reconsider his diet and it was their newly rescued calves that ultimately made him make the switch to oat milk. Anyone who was familiar with how much milk he liked to drink will understand how big an achievement this was!
Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation
This will be new knowledge to most of you, but one of Richard’s favourite shows on the nature channel was “Orangutan Jungle School”. His family speculates it was because his own mannerisms were so much like those of an orangutan! It was his daughter’s wish to take him to Borneo one day to see these beautiful creatures in the flesh.
