Richard "Dick" Penney, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2024, in Scarborough, Ontario. He was born on December 10, 1945, in St. John's Newfoundland, to Alexander and Mary Penney.
Richard was preceded in death by his loving parents, Alexander and Mary Penney, his loving sisters Loretta and Rosalind, and his wonderful brother Ron. Their memories were always cherished by Richard, and he carried them in his heart throughout his life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 wonderful years, Elizabeth, who stood by his side through thick and thin. Richard was a devoted father to his two children, Stephen and Cheryl (Tommy). His beautiful grandchildren, Jenna and Riley, and great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Blaire, brought him immeasurable joy. He also leaves behind a very dear sister in law Phyllis who he shared many laughs with throughout the years.
Richard was a loving brother to Doug and Roger, and sisters Dallas and Lully. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Richard/”Dick”. His close friends from the coffee shop and all the friends he made throughout his life were an integral part of his journey, and he cherished the laughs and memories they shared.
Richard's favorite little companion, Maggie, was always by his side, wagging her tail with love every day. Their bond was unbreakable, and Maggie brought Richard comfort and companionship.
On October 25, 1968, Richard married the love of his life, Elizabeth. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. Richard was Elizabeth's rock, and their love was an inspiration to all who knew them.
Richard enjoyed many years working as a welder/fitter, and he found great satisfaction in his trade. His skill and dedication were unparalleled, and he took pride in his work. With his early retirement, Richard and Elizabeth were able to enjoy several carefree years together, creating cherished memories both at home and at their cottage.
A man of generosity, Richard made many contributions to his community. He selflessly volunteered for the St. Vincent De Paul Society, touching the lives of those in need with his kind heart and compassion.
As a true sports enthusiast, Richard's love for the Toronto Maple Leafs and hockey was unmatched. He knew the sport inside out and rarely missed a game on TV, even during his last days. Richard's unwavering support for his team was an inspiration, even in the face of inevitable defeats. His passion for the game will forever be remembered.
Richard was full of charm, wit, and had an incredible capacity to care and love his family and friends. He was a genuine soul who always put others first. Richard's kindness and warmth brightened the lives of those around him and left an indelible mark on their hearts.
The family will be holding a Celebration of Life in the very near future and a date will be announced shortly. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer Society (https://alzheimer.ca/en) or the Canadian Cancer Society (https://cancer.ca/en) in Richard's name. Both causes were close to his heart, and any contribution would be greatly appreciated.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and doctors at Scarborough Grace Hospital, ward 3A, for their exceptional compassion, care, and dedication shown to Richard during his stay.
Richard "Dick" Penney brought joy, love, and laughter to all who knew him. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his loved ones, and he will be dearly missed. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
