May 28, 1962 - July 24, 2023
A man you don’t meet every day.
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mark J. Lewis on July 24, 2023. Mark was an enigmatic figure across his personal and professional life. He was a loving husband, father, and son. Moreover, he was a fierce friend. His passing was very sudden. However, he was surrounded by his loving family and passed gently in his sleep.
Born in Denmark to Martin and Ann Lewis, Mark moved around for much of his young life, with the family following Martin’s academic interests to England, back to Denmark, to the US and to Ireland before finally settling in Aurora, Ontario.
It was in Aurora that Mark met Ginny and the rest is history; they fell in love in high school and have been by each others’ side since then. Children Maddy and Morgan came along to round out their family, and Mark never took for granted how blessed he was to have them in his life.
After high school, Mark travelled to York, England for university, and then returned to Canada to complete law school at the University of Toronto. After he was called to the bar, he was thrilled to accept a position as an associate labour lawyer at Sack, Goldblatt, Mitchell. From there, he spent time as General Counsel for LIUNA Local 183 and Vice-Chair of the Ontario Labour Relations Board. After that, he was honoured to accept positions at the Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBCJA), first as General Counsel and then as Chief of Staff for the UBC Regional Council, fulfilling his lifelong ambition of leading a labour union.
His legacy of mentorship crosses all bounds, from lawyers young and old to a battalion of youth rugby players he had the distinct pleasure of coaching. Perhaps his most lasting impact that he will leave is the number of people who can trace the start of their careers back to him, be that as lawyers, carpenters, and everyone in between.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Ginny Barton, his children Maddy and Morgan as well as his mother Ann Lewis, sister Clare (Phil Zangari), nieces and nephews Patrick, Liam, Jessica, and Jenna. He also leaves behind an array of extended family members and godchildren, Ciaran and Callyssa, whom he loved as if they were his own. Predeceased by his father Martin Lewis and Gerard Little (Ann’s partner).
Marching on together!
