Passed peacefully on Friday August 9th at age 88 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Ken was born in Carbonear, NL, son of the late Harry and Irene Soper. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife Marjorie of 60 years, children Derrick, Michael, Brenda (Paul), and 5 grand children Lorrie-Lyne, Daniel-John, Alysson-Mary, Michael and Matthew. He was predeceased by brothers William, Harry, Charles, Don and Lloyd, and is survived by sister Lillian Babb, sister in-law Marie, and many nieces and nephews.
Ken left Nfld. for Canada at age 20 and was employed for 42 yrs. with The Canadian Press, Canada’s National News Agency, retiring in 1987 as Internal Auditor. He was a long-time member of The United Church of Canada, the Liberal Party of Canada, and the Royal Canadian Legion.
Ken was a veteran of the Canadian Army, having served with the 2nd Battalion of the RCR in the Korea War of 1950-52, and with the Canadian Militia (48th Highlanders of Canada) from 1952-55.
While he was a resident of Sunnybrook Veteran’s K Wing he was made a Field Knight of the Order of St. George and a Resident Ambassador.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Veterans K Wing for their exceptional care. Thanks also to the staff of the Critical Care Unit on M2 for their compassionate care during his final days.
Friends will be received at the Jerrett Funeral Home, 660 Kennedy Rd., Scarborough on Tuesday Aug 13th from 2-4 and 6-8. Funeral service will be held in the Chapel on Wednesday Aug 14th at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Victoria Park United Church, the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
