AS PER JACK'S WISHES, THERE WILL BE NO VIEWING OR VISITATION.
A CELEBRATION OF JACK'S LIFE WILL BE HELD AT A LATER DATE.
Surrounded by his companion, Elma, and her daughter, Laurel, Jack, in his 75th year, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2010 in the palliative care unit of Toronto East General Hospital after a short battle with cancer. Jack was the only child of Richard and Olive McGillivray of East York (both deceased). Jack is survived by his dear friend and companion of 17 years, Elma Rajnauth of East York and by his loving aunt, Jean Kirkpatrick of London, Ontario, and his many cousins, nieces and nephews. In his professional life, Jack worked for over 30 years as a product designer with the John Wood Company, but is internationally famous and will long be remembered for his enthusiastic pursuit and outstanding accomplishments in the sport of model aviation. Jack has been an innovative builder and flyer of many different types and classes of model aircraft for over 60 years, participating in local and national competitive events in both Canada and the United States. Jack has accumulated hundreds of trophies from his competition wins, mostly in the Free Flight branches of model aircraft competition, both Indoor and Outdoor. He has set numerous Canadian records in the Indoor Free Flight endurance categories, several of which are still held. Some of his greatest accomplishments have been in competitions at the International level. Jack has represented Canada no less than 25 times as a member of the teams sent to compete in World Championships of model aviation as staged by the International governing body of aircraft competition of all types, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI), and at venues all over the world. In all probability, he has represented Canada at such prestigious events more times than any other model aviation competitor in Canada. In 1993, Jack was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the national governing body for model aviation in Canada, the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (MAAC). He has friends and admirers in many different countries of the globe, and he will be sorely missed by the many flyers both in and out of our local clubs who have looked upon Jack as a mentor and role model for their own modeling pursuits. Jack will also be remembered for his intelligence, good nature, love of life and his sense of humor. Expressions of sympathy and comfort are welcome and can be sent to [email protected] At Jack’s request, there will be no funeral or viewing, but a celebration of his life and accomplishments will be held at a later date. If desired, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Giffen-Mack ‘Danforth’ Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 416-698-3121. Condolences and messages of comfort may also be sent to www.giffenmackdanforth.com
