September 23, 1951 - July 6, 2021
Joan died after a brief illness. Beloved wife of Roger Kenrick and friend to Roger’s children,
Charlotte and Thom, and their families. Loving daughter of Edward (deceased) and Patricia
Curran. Beloved sister of John (Evelyn Cunningham), Elyse (George Strathy), Chris (Sue
Brighton) and Claudia (Greg Acton). Loving aunt to her nieces and nephews and their children.
Joan grew up in Sarnia, Ontario and settled in Toronto after graduating from York University.
She had a wide-ranging career in the fields of government, advertising, finance and non-profit
but her greatest joys were found outside work, in her many hobbies, volunteer commitments
and in the arts.
Joan loved to be on trend and when you were just learning about a new play, song, book,
movie or fashion, she was already wearing the “Been there Done that” t-shirt. In the summer
before she turned 13, Joan made daily trips to the corner store to see if the August issue of
“Seventeen” was out yet and was over the moon when it finally appeared with its photos of
“back to school” outfits. If her peers weren’t quite ready for those new looks, it didn’t matter to
Joan. She would confidently wear them, even if it meant she was the only one wearing a mididress
to her high school prom (the shock of it in 1969!)
Joan loved to move and took up different activities over her life that allowed her to express
herself in new ways. Her greatest passion was dance but she didn’t content herself with going
to ballet performances. She took up tap dance and ballet as an adult and enjoyed every minute
of it. Each decade of her life was defined by a different physical activity: swimming in her teens
- becoming head lifeguard at Canatara Beach; running in her 20’s; Pilates in her 30’s;
rollerblading in her 40’s; cycling in her 50’s and 60’s.
If friend or family mentioned something they needed or were looking for, it became Joan’s
mission to find it for them. Her executive-assistant skills were unparalleled. Before you knew it,
Joan had left a package by your door containing the exact thing you had in mind.
Joan’s passing leaves all who knew her and loved her grateful for her friendship.
A funeral mass in celebration of Joan’s life has been held. Condolences may be shared at
