My deepest condolences to my cousins. I will always carry fond memories of my godmother and godfather in my heart. I have many memories of them sharing time together over  a birthday, Easter or Christmas. May they rest in peace. Elizabeth Muia

I just remembered something else… malasadas… Also one of my Dad’s (your brother’s) favourites. I don’t think I’ve had any since the last batch you whipped up.  I remember how you (just like your Mom) used to tell us kids to “make sure you press them down firmly in the sugar,” sweetening the deliciousness… So many fond memories, remembered with love. 

It is with great fondness our family remembers a very, very fine lady. Both Mikaela and Mackenzie treasure their baby gifts she wonderfully sewed for them so many years ago and they will be handed down hopefully one day. She had so many talents and was a strong and gracious woman. Our family enjoyed the time we shared with her at her home in Portugal in 2009 and learned so much about her life there raising her children.  Our condolences to the family with  our deepest respect. She will always be remembered.

Reading these sentiments brings tears to my eyes.  Tia Helena, you are a beautiful person.  I echo the words of others who have posted here… Even with a family so large (siblings, spouse, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, the list goes on…) you had a way of making each one of us feel special with the words you spoke, the cute smile that reached your eyes, the quick jokes, the gifts of chocolate (remember Bar 5???), individual Easter breads, cross-stich ornaments, bibs, quilts and more.  For about the first 8 years of my life, your home was my home; but, even after moving to Etobicoke, visiting your home always felt like “coming back home.”  Always greeted with a smile, followed by homemade biscuits (Mmmm… I especially loved the chocolate S’s, my favourite!) and milk (later, coffee); the warmth of your home reflecting the warmth of the person you are.  Like Danielle wrote, while I was heartbroken by the news of your passing; I, too, am relieved that you are no longer suffering physically and that you have gone to join the angels that have arrived in Heaven before you.  Rest with God, Tia Helen.  To all that she has left behind, may the memories of the wonderful times spent in her love bring some comfort to you.  Lots of Love from Zelia, Aldo, Daniel and Carina.

I was the first of many grandchildren and the first to give you great grandchildren.  You always had a smile and a dairy milk or Cadbury for us. The skill of cross stitch we share the love of feeding everyone around us.  Having beautiful dresses made by you up to my prom, to being with me pick my wedding dress. From the many beautiful cross stitches and quilts and then baby bibs for the children. I’ve spent the last few days flooded with memories and time shared together. 
I’m so lucky to have spend so many years with you and yet it’s still not enough time for us, with being out of town and not getting to see family as much as I had wanted.  Thank you for so much love throughout the years.

To my vovó, 

When I learned you finally were received in Heaven and resting in peace, alongside those who were sent to be Angels far before their time, I was relieved and torn all at once.  As bonded as we were and forever will be, I hope to carry your legacy and dedication for family unity and strength.  It always meant so much to me that you talked about how much you loved that we shared our birth month, birthstone, and name together.  My happiest memory is spending the summer with you in Portugal and you teaching me the ropes;), talking about food you made and always giving me your tough love! My funniest memory (there are a lot to choose from because you’re a secret joker) was when you gave me the framed cross-stitched house and only put my name and told Sean off for living with me before marriage. My saddest memory was sitting on the porch and you telling me how scared you were about losing your memory.  Through all the years together you taught me so much but nothing more important than that silence is strength sometimes, to watch myself before I watch others and nothing is impossible nothing.    I will forever love, miss and thank you.  xo

You will never be forgotten and your gifts were and still are cherised to this day.  

My aunt made wonderful bibs for the babies in our family.  I still have mine that she gave me for my babies who are now 27 and 24.  I also love the quilt she made for me.

Our heartfelt condolences to the family.  Sadly, due to covid, we are in isolation but hope to be able to share some hugs with you when we can.

My vovó passed away on Saturday. She was far more formidable than she ever really let on, raising her kids and coming to a country where she didn’t speak the language. I have so many memories of showing up at her door and instantly being fed or offered food. She was always ready to feed you, no matter when you arrived. I would sit and watch her cross-stitch or cook while watching her soap operas or game shows on tv. She tried a few times to teach me to cross-stitch and sew and I never picked it up until years later. Now every time I pick up some needle and thread, I think of her.    

I will miss listening to her and wish I could show her that I do remember some of the things she taught me about cross-stitch. If I wasn’t upset enough about having covid before, I am now because I can’t fully say goodbye in person. May she rest in peace.
