It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother and grandmother Gizella Viola. She was born on May 1, 1936 in the small town of Törökbálint, Hungary and passed peacefully at home surrounded by her family and immense love on February 9, 2021.
She is survived by and continues to live in the hearts of: her daughter Gizella Fekete and son-in-law Zoltan Fekete, her grandchildren Kristofer Fekete (Holly Jepson-Fekete), Alana Posa (Phillip Posa) and Julia Fekete, and her loving sister in Hungary Irén Behringer (Sándor Behringer), along with many nieces, nephews, goddaughter and close family friends.
Waiting for her in heaven was her late husband Viktor Viola, her loving sons Viktor Jr. and Stevie, her late life partner Odon Szabo, and her parents, brothers and sisters.
Gizella's greatest joy was her family and she lived to love. Those that knew her knew just how big her heart was. Her door was always open for family and friends which meant there was always something delicious on the stove just in case. She was the master of Hungarian cuisine with particular specialties in cabbage rolls and húsleves, hence why her kitchen was always so popular. Music was such a big part of her life so she was no stranger to singing along while cooking or whirling around the dancefloor doing the tango or waltz. She took joy in family vacations and she especially loved to cruise. She was particularly adept at relieving the casino slots of their money. We'd be remiss if we didn't mention her wonderful sense of humour and the laughs she brought through her hilarious button-pushing mishaps on video calls.
Gizella faced many challenges in life, not the least of which was escaping communist Hungary in 1956 and starting a new life in Canada. Even after surviving numerous personal tragedies, she continued to embrace life with joy, love and strength. There was no obstacle that was too large or too daunting for her to overcome. While she battled illness for the last four years, she fought to the very end like the true warrior that she was. While we miss her dearly, we now have an angel that will continue to watch over us.
Our family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of the compassionate people at Central LHIN and the visiting nurses from St. Elizabeth who together helped make Gizella's final days at home possible. The family would especially like to thank nurse Rita Guo whom Gizella loved dearly, Dr. Daphna Grossman at NYGH, and Dr. Jack Sandler. Their care over the last several years made such a difference and gave us four more years to share with her.
Memorial donations in memory of Gizella Viola may be made to Saint Elizabeth Healthcare Foundation or the Freeman Centre for Palliative Care at North York General Hospital.
