On Nov 3, 2015, Elizabeth Luther passed away peacefully in her own home, on her own terms, surrounded by friends and family. She was 91.
Known for her compassionate heart, inquisitive mind, intractable will and generosity of spirit, Elizabeth will be remembered by those who knew her as a friend, author, adventuress, parent and grandmother as well as an active and potent force in her many social circles, across Canada and around the globe.
Born in North Bay, Ontario on Oct 26 1924, Elizabeth’s journeys took her to British Columbia and back. After the loss of her brother Stuart in World War II, she married Gordon Luther in 1944; together they raised a family of four in Toronto where Elizabeth pursued an Hons. BA from the University of Toronto. In 1979 she and Gordon relocated to Kenya where they spent the next five years. Following her return to Toronto, Elizabeth went on to write and publish a number of books and articles.
Elizabeth is survived by her sister Kathleen Empey, her daughters Karen (Les) and Elizabeth (Christopher) and her son Walter (Laura). She is predeceased by her husband Gordon and sons Stephen and Michael. Her grandchildren Mark (Lynette), Ryan (Julie), Evan (Rachel), Jordan and Stephen will always remember her.
A service to commemorate Elizabeth's life will be held at Eglinton St. George's United Church, on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m..
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bereaved Families of Ontario, Canadian Cancer Society or Salvation Army.
