Elizabeth passed away peacefully on November 15, 2014 at Sunnybrook Hospital in her 100th year. Predeceased by her husband, Lieutenant Sydney Astle, and by her granddaughter Chantal Heffernan. Loving mother of Carol Heffernan (Paul). Dear Nana of Charlene (David) Klein, Christine, Kevin (Lauren), Mark (Jill) and Sean (Colleen) Heffernan. Great-nana of Naomi and Davis Klein, Isabelle, Liam, Emily, Nathan, Connor, Grace and Isla Heffernan. Beloved daughter of the late Andrew and Frances Kalichak and sister of the late Rose Dunn, Lillian Hunter, Adam Wolfe, Anthony Kalichak and Albert Wolfe. Elizabeth was the aunt of Frances (Ky) Smilowski, Theo Kover, Tom Kalichak, Barry Wolfe (Joyce) and Linda Wupori.
Elizabeth was born at Sifton, Manitoba on October 15, 1915. She moved with her parents to the Dauphin district in 1916 and received her early education at Wilson River School. She lived in Winnipeg for a few years before moving to Toronto in the late 1940’s. On October 21, 1944, Elizabeth had the honour of launching the warship, Pluto, at the Port Arthur Shipyard in, what is now, Thunder Bay, Ontario, as part of Canada-wide ceremonies opening the Seventh Victory Loan.
Elizabeth had a full and active life, travelling the world extensively well into her 80’s, but her greatest pleasure was spending time at the cottage with Carol, Paul and her many grand- and great-grand children.
The family would like to extend a very special thank-you to Dr. Jocelyn Charles for the caring and compassionate attention she gave Elizabeth over many years, and to the staff at The Briton House for their dedication and kindness.
A celebration of her life will be privately held. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at 11 AM at St. Monica’s Church, 44 Broadway Avenue, Toronto. Entombment at Holy Cross Cemetery. On line condolences may be made at www.trullfuneralsyonge.com.
