OZOLS, Edmunds — Passed away Thursday, January 30, 2014. Beloved husband of Silvija (1934-2003). Loving father of Velta. He devoted his life to scouting as a leader for almost 70 years first in Germany then in Canada, with the Latvian Boy Scouts and Scouts Canada. Acted as District and Assistant Area Commisioner for Scouts Canada, and even in his 90s as Guildmaster for the 6th Canadian Baden-Powell Guild, Toronto. Honored with Canada's Centennial Medal for his work with ethnic scouting, especially the Canadian Ethnic Scouts Conference; Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian Scouting medals and Scouts Canada Silver Acorn award and Life Membership in the Greater Toronto Area. Founding member and last chairman of the Baltic Veterans' League in Canada. Honored with the Estonian Military Cross and with the Lithuanian Home Guards' highest award, the Order of the Star. Global senior of the Latvian student association Konkordija Zelmenis. Founding president of an OPSEU local. Longstanding active member of Daugavas Vanagi (Latvian Relief Society), receiving their highest award. Many years a member of the Empire Club of Canada and the Royal Canadian Military Institute. Editor of the Latvian philatelic magazine Krājējs. Commander of the Latvian Home Guard units outside of Latvia. For participating in the 1991 events in Latvia awarded the official national Barricade Memorial Medal. Friends and relatives will be received at the Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home & Chapel, 467 Sherbourne St. (South of Wellesley), Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 10 am with the Funeral Service beginning at 11 a.m.
