Douglas Alson Smail

Doug was a retired professor of Mechanical Engineering at Ryerson University where he taught for almost 40 years. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 54 years, Nancy Smail. Doug and Nancy first met in high school in Norwich, Ontario where Doug’s mother was teaching before meeting again after university. Doug and Nancy lived in the Beaches area of Toronto where they were long time members of the Waverly Baptist Church for which Doug served as Property Steward. The couple travelled widely in their later years with cruises and tours in Europe, a China tour, as well as extensive stays in different parts of southern United States.

He is deeply loved by his daughters Jennifer Althouse and her husband Brian, Dawn Ullman and her husband Brett, and his son, Jonathan Smail. Doug truly loved spending time with his grandchildren Madie, Andrew, Zoe, Ben and Marla. He will also be fondly remembered and deeply missed by his nephews Ross and Hugh McCague, their partners and children.

A private Funeral Service in memory of Doug will be organized by the family at Giffen-Mack Funeral Home. Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Douglas to gideons.ca alzheimer.ca and/or shepherdvillage.org
