We sadly announce the passing of Donna in her 89th year on March 12, 2022. Devoted wife for 66 years to Gordon Percy. Predeceased by her parents Walter and Grace Compton, and her sister Pamela Richmond. Sister to Robert Compton (Sandra), Cathy Wood, and Leslie Anne Singers (Sandy).
Wonderful Mother to, Elaine (Cal), Stephen (Karen), David and Donna Leigh. Loving Grandmother to Meaghan (Dave), Brittney (Andrew), Nicole, Stuart (Carly), Max (Isabella), Jerome (Macy), Ashton (Chace), Joshua (Alexandra), and Rachael. Proud Great Grandmother to Connor and Breanna (Brittney & Andrew), Aurora and Coda (Ashton & Chace), and Miller (Stuart & Carly).
A nurse by profession prior to leaving to raise her family, Donna canvased for many years for the Canadian Cancer Society. She helped stroke victims to regain their speech at the Edithvale Community Centre, and volunteered in her children’s school library and lunch program for many years. Donna spent over 50 years volunteering with Girl Guides of Canada in many roles, including as a leader taking dozens of girls to camp, working on the Training Committee and serving as Chairperson for the Archive Committee, where she was honoured with many accolades.
She was also an avid supporter and volunteer for Harmony Place, a nonprofit organization that specializes in providing day programs for adults with multiple disabilities. For many years Donna attended the Literature Program at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies where she studied a broad range of great writings. She was a season ticket holder of the Toronto Ballet, the Toronto Symphony, the Mirvish Theatre and the Oakville, Markham and Curtain Club community theatres. An avid reader, Donna always had a novel at her side. She loved music of all genres and dancing, especially with her beloved husband Gord.
Donna loved life and was always eager for new adventures and challenges including golfing, card making, quilting, working with stained glass, needle work and baking. She always had an open door policy, with a cup of coffee ready for anyone who needed someone to talk to. Often referred to as a “Pollyanna” Donna always saw the best in everyone she met and lived by the philosophy that you treat others as you would want to be treated yourself and you should never regret being kind. She was a true friend to all that knew her. She travelled with Gord in the later part of their lives to Europe, Alaska and many cities in the United States and throughout Canada. They enjoyed many wonderful golf trips exploring Ontario that were meticulously planned by Gord. Theirs was truly an everlasting love.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Donna’s name be sent to Harmony Place. Donation information may be obtained at harmonyplace.on.ca.
A private family interment service was held at Highland Memory Gardens, Toronto. A celebration of Donna's life will be held at a date to be announced.
