It is with sadness that we say goodbye to Dimas Mendonca Diniz. He was husband to the late Emilia whom he loved dearly, and father to both Dimas Hilario and Lizette. He was born on the island of Terceira, in the Azores on October 5th 1940. Coincidentally, it was on his birthday that he left us, at the age of 76. He died peacefully at Toronto East General Hospital, due to complications resulting from lung cancer.
Dimas came to Canada in 1969, settled in Toronto, and came to work many decades as a crane and steel worker. He enjoyed musical pursuits, such as playing the violin in various "dancas" in his earlier years, and playing the harmonica for his grandchildren later on in life. He also enjoyed sports such as fishing, hockey and soccer. His passion for the Toronto Maple Leafs endured over the years, like his support of his beloved Benfica. He often listened to their games on a little radio, while sitting on his porch watching the world go by. He tinkered relentlessly with this old radio, coaxing it to work, when most people simply would have replaced it. After all, he was a real handyman who took great pleasure in making repairs, like it was his art. He also enjoyed gardening, and took particular pride in the success of his dahlias. Dimas was creative, generous and hardworking, to name but a few attributes. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and neighbours to whom he waved daily from his porch. Yes, we will miss him, but trust that he is in a better place. Rest in peace, Dimas.
