Dave was born in Vancouver B.C, the second son of Henry Walters Sr. and Rosa Jessie Walters, and brother of Henry Jr.
Dave had a long and distinguished career the Canadian Forces, in Field Artillery and Army Aviation. He joined the Militia at 15 and served in the Regular Force for 35 years and the Reserves for 15. A qualified fixed-wing and helicopter pilot, he was a graduate of the University of Manitoba, the Canadian Army Staff College, the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College and the US Army Command and General Staff College. While he held numerous command and staff positions, he considered his appointment as the Commanding Officer of the First Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, in Lahr, West Germany, from 1975 to 1977 to be the highpoint of his career. After leaving the Regular Force in 1988, Dave moved to the Federal Public Service as the Director of Audit and Evaluation at the National Search and Rescue Secretariat.
His marriage to Tannis Edgar, in West Germany on Valentine’s Day 1958, was a long and happy one. Together, had they had interesting and varied postings, to Germany, USA, many parts of Canada. They had three children, David Grant Walters (Monique Symons), Robyn Jean Walters (Patricio Penteado) and Nancy Dianne Walters (Riccardo Coen). There are five grandchildren, Alison & Sarah Walters; Thomas Penteado; Max & Samuel Coen.
Travel to many parts of Canada and the World was an important part of the Walters' family life. As their post-military life and children's careers took them to far flung locations, interesting visits to Ghana, Egypt, Cyprus, Lesotho, South Africa, Italy, and many visits to Toronto & Rome. They also enjoyed an annual extended sun vacation to Mexico after their retirement to Maple Bay, BC in 1991. Predeceased by Tannis, he moved to Toronto in December 2019 where he was surrounded by family and well looked after by the wonderful staff and caregivers at Christie Gardens and many new friends. He will be remembered with love and affection by his children & delightful grandchildren as well as friends & colleagues.
