David was born on August 25, 1940 at home on Gledhill Ave, East York Township to Malcolm and Betty (née Squibb).
David is survived, inspired and loved by his children Scarlett (Bryan Scanga) and Justin (Tania, née Kennedy), and his grandchildren Isabella, Joshua, and Alexander (Scanga) who will continue his legacy of laughter and terrible singing. He will be dearly missed and loved by his brother James, sister-in-law Ann, nephews Brad, Todd and their families, and predeceased by Joel. He will be fondly remembered and missed by friends Wendy Farquhar-Abblitt, Doreen Romanelli and Father Leo Huard.
David spent his working career at the Scarborough Board of Education as a teacher, principal, itinerant, and centrally-assigned principal. He was a consummate educator and learner. He was most proud of his Associate, Institute of Education from the University of London, England. He lived life teaching, sharing and helping others. He was a man of many words and even more songs.
David was a proud loving father and grandfather and was a fierce proud Canadian – he wanted everyone to know that. He loved to travel and cruise. He loved the theatre, show tunes, singing and Streisand. He loved French, figure skating, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and chocolate. He loved assisting others and he loved his Scottish heritage. He recently became a Lord and owner of a parcel of land in Scotland and thought that was the best thing ever. “Oh say”.
We would like to thank all the staff and residents at Chartwell Avondale Retirement residence where Dad lived over the last 5 years. As Dad said, “this was the best place to be”. We would also like to thank the amazing nurses and doctors in the Emerg. Resus. and CCU Departments of Michael Garron Hospital. The care and compassion you nurses showed to our dad, David, was truly awe-inspiring and we appreciate everything you did for him in his final days.
Due to Covid restrictions we will be having a private service on Monday, August 16, 2021 at 3:00pm at Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home, Toronto. Cremation will take place afterwards. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice. One day we hope to have a big Party to celebrate David’s life – as that is what he wanted. In the meantime, raise a glass in his memory.
