With deep sorrow, we mourn the loss of Bryan Wayne Tuckey, who passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the age of 68, surrounded by his wife Susan and daughter Kirsten.
Bryan's enduring love, adventurous spirit, and unwavering passion will forever live on in the hearts of his beloved wife, Susan(nee Allan); cherished daughter, Kirsten Tuckey (Robin); caring son, Geoffrey Tuckey; dear stepdaughters, Jessica Bax (Brian), Katelyn Hoare (Zachary), and Erin Duffy (Jonathan); and adored granddaughter, Olivia Hoare.
He is also survived by his loving parents, Wayne and Marjorie; sisters, Susan Turnbull (Ian) and Jill Tuckey (Lee); brother, Peter (Janet); nieces, Katherine (Michael), Elizabeth (Jason), and Megan (Kyle); as well as numerous extended family members and close friends.
Bryan came into this world on December 7, 1955, in Exeter, Ontario, where he cherished his time at his grandparents' farm, creating precious memories with his cousins and grandparents. A talented and tall athlete, Bryan excelled in Basketball, Baseball, Football, and Swimming.
He pursued his passion for Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Waterloo, where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Bryan dedicated his career to urban planning, holding notable positions such as Adjudicator for the Ontario Land Tribunal, President and CEO of BILD, Commissioner of Planning and Development Services for York Region, Director of Community Planning in the City of Toronto, and Assistant Deputy Minister (Acting) at the Ministry of Housing, among others. As Planner in Residence at the University of Waterloo, he inspired students with his profound passion for planning. Bryan also mentored many new graduates in navigating the numerous options to pursue.
Outside of work, Bryan and Susan embarked on numerous adventures, exploring over 100 countries and territories together. South Africa held a special place in Bryan's heart, where he spent six memorable weeks on an exchange program promoting world understanding and peace with the Rotary Club. His love for South Africa led to multiple return visits, including a meaningful trip with his children, Kirsten and Geoffrey.
The month of March was Bryan's favorite time of year. He was dedicated to the longstanding family tradition of making maple syrup: a practice that has been a part of the family since 1917.
It would be rare to find a person who knew Bryan, who didn't know how much he loved Van Morrison's music. In addition to attending many local concerts, he and Susan even ventured to Northern Ireland for two intimate dinner performances, where they savoured the experience of being in the presence of the musical legend. Van Morrison's songs were more than just music to Bryan; they were a source of comfort and inspiration that will continue to echo in his spirit for eternity.
Despite a brave 2.5-year battle with prostate cancer, Bryan remained optimistic and resilient throughout his journey, a true testament to his strength of character.
Bryan's legacy of love, dedication, and adventurous spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. May his memory be a beacon of light in our hearts forevermore.
We are eternally grateful to Dr. Tony Finelli and Dr. Di (Maria) Jiang from Princess Margaret Hospital, Dr. Cristena Rackus from Toronto General Hospital, and the dedicated medical teams at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital for their exceptional care, professionalism, and compassion during Bryan's illness. And thank you Danielle, Andrew and Dr. Vince for giving him so much compassion, comfort, and care in his last few hours.
