Born on July 4, 1965, in Toronto, he is survived by his two children and his wife, Hyekyung, as well as his sister, Nancy Marsh Byles, and many cousins, nephews, and nieces in Canada and Korea. He was preceded in death by his father, Jim Carruthers Marsh, and mother, Eleanor Gledhill
Growing up in Richmond Hill, Bruce graduated from Bayview Secondary School. He loved to play baseball and hockey and also enjoyed duck hunting with his uncle, Tom Gledhill.
He became a fishing and wildlife technologist after he graduated from Sir. Sanford Flemming College. His passions included Summer in Kincardine, Fall in Algonquin Park, and hockey in the Winter. Bruce loved travelling and it was in Korea where he was teaching English that he met Hyekyung. Upon his return to Canada, in the late 90s, Bruce worked for 15 years at Rogers in networking infrastructure where he was known as ‘Swampy’.
He was much loved by his family, his cousins from the Gledhill, Bailey and Rahme families here in Canada, as well as his extended family in Korea. Among his close friends were his former coworkers from Rogers including Bruce Bullock, childhood friends from Richmond Hill, and David Leyes from Kincardine’s Aintree Trailer Park, Neighbourhood friends, Doug and Leverne, and his son’s East York Tycats Hockey team. In addition, Wani and Derek.
Bruce was a foodie - loving Asian food, especially Korean cuisine. A wearer of goofy outdoor gear and a cultural explorer, he was a patient coach for his own children and the East York Hockey league.
In the words of his daughter, Claire -
“Dad loved the great outdoors, exploring nature, and being active. He was always kind to others and was very humorous as well as intelligent. He also loved to travel and be spontaneous. I hope to follow in his footsteps someday. He has taught me so much about life in so many different ways with a new approach each time. I will always look up to him. May he rest in peace
Love, Claire”
And his son, Nathan -
“Dad was a very smart, humble, and funny man. He had the lightest heart, even with all that he went through. He found joy and satisfaction in little things and always had an ongoing interest with what was going on in the world. He had a lot of empathy for the marginalized people of society. He always took an interest in learning more about new topics, especially the ones I was into like basketball.”
Cremation will be April 2, 2020
Due to the current restrictions on public gatherings, there will be no service at this time, but a Celebration of Life Service for Bruce will be held at a later date.
My Family can't say enough to appreciate invaluable support over the years for my family.
My Children will be grateful to see & hear stories about their Dad
