Alphonse was a dear soul with a streak of wickedness. Growing up as he did, he stood less of a chance than most and tried his family more than most. I loved him dearly: his smile, the laugh in his voice, the way he called me “Sis” and “Franny.” He was no saint, as most can attest, but his charm and his manners were impeccable, and when he came to me for help, which he often did, I didn’t mind because I knew, I hoped, he was trying to right his course, he was trying to sort himself out. Alphonse was a survivor. His life was never easy. He usually went from the frying pan into the fire. Now, he has moved from the fire into God’s arms. Phonsie, I know that heaven embraces you and that Mum, Dad and Vance are waiting for you. And I know that the Lord has granted you the peace and forgiveness that you deserve, just as our Mum (Joan), bless her soul, always did. She trusted the good in you, overlooking every foible and miss-step. Indeed, to any condemnation any one of us might raise, she’d inevitably say, “Well, he’s the only one of you kids who does my dishes every time he comes to visit.” Ironically, it was you, Phonsie, who were robbed: your time on this planet was too complicated, too difficult, too short, with far too few opportunities. You could never catch a real break. Despite all that is in the past, you are missed and loved terribly.
In Ontario, Alphonse Douglas Latchford (née Farmer) is predeceased by his loving parents Francis (Frank) and Joan Latchford and by his elder brother Vancel Latchford.
