He was born to parents Alexander and Rose Biro (nee Dolinski) on March 11, 1940, in Welland, Ontario. Alex graduated from Tillsonburg District Highschool and received a degree in Biochemistry from Ontario Agricultural College (now the University of Guelph) in 1963. After graduation, Alex started a career in teaching and was quickly promoted to Head of the Science Department at David and Mary Thomson Collegiate in Toronto. He was an active member of the Science Teachers Association and was highly regarded by his students and colleagues. Alex continued his rise in Education, becoming a school Principal and ultimately Superintendent for the Toronto District School Board.
He is survived by his best friend Joan Biro (nee Beischel), having just celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary, and by his daughter Juli Langhorne, her husband Andrew Langhorne and granddaughter Emma. Alex is also survived by older brother Leonard Dumbrova and his younger sister Rosemary Sherritt (nee Biro), Leonard’s wife Pat Barrett and his children Jill & Steven, Rosemary’s partner Mel Livingstone and son Todd. In addition, he is survived by Joan’s family, his sister-in-law Shirley McClarty (nee Beischel), her husband Vaughan McClarty and their children, as well as Joan’s nephew Jason Beischel and niece Jennifer Gelowitz (nee Beischel). Alex is also survived by his former wife Linda Horler (nee Thompson), mother to Juli.
After retiring from education, Alex joined Joan in a health consulting business she began after her retirement, at first with Body Wise, then for the last fifteen years with Nu Skin. This opened up an entirely new life experience and one where Alex flourished.
He developed an insatiable passion for helping others with their health journey. It gave him a great vehicle to blend his knowledge with his legendary humour, resulting in an effective presentation style that has impacted thousands of people.
He and Joan combined business with their passion for travel, including regular ski trips to Vail, Palm Springs, and beaches around the world, but always supported their team while “working” from the closest Starbucks they could find.
A biochemist by training, he was passionate about the science of nutrition and shared that passion with everyone… anywhere. In particular, he did many trainings on his favourite immune system product, Ai/E10 and was always generous with his time and his knowledge whether by phone, Zoom, in person or to groups, large or small.
Alex was particularly proud when watching his daughter Juli follow in his footsteps as a leader and ultimately as a business partner to him and Joan.
Whenever possible, business trips to Utah would conclude with dinner at Robert Redford’s Sundance Resort, a very special tradition for the team.
When not working, Alex enjoyed spending countless hours tending to his legendary gardens. He had a flair for home design and could often be found (or not) in his ‘man cave.’
While Alex Biro was a success by any measure, more importantly, Alex lived a life of significance.
We will be having a Celebration of Life at Joan and Alex’s beautiful home later this year. In lieu of flowers, please honour Alex by spending more quality time with your family and friends. OFTEN. Share what you are grateful for with each other… and don’t forget to LAUGH.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.rosar-morrison.com for the Biro family.
