Tim was born in Newark, NJ on December 11, 1943 to proud parents, Bernard and Grace Hughes. He spent his adolescence in South Orange, NJ and was a graduate of St. Benedict’s Prep. (1961). He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University (1965) and law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law (1968). Tim was a lifelong advocate for social justice. In 1969 he began what would be a 40-year career with the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender. He had great passion and was well known for his work as a trial attorney. He was firmly committed to the best interest of the people he defended, changing the course of many lives. Tim was simple in the best of ways. He was a kind and generous man, dedicated to finding the good in others and giving people a second chance. Above all, he was a devoted father and grandfather, and a steadfast friend to so many. He was an avid reader and Seton Hall basketball fanatic. Tim is survived by his 3 children, Brian Hughes, Maureen Ventimiglia and Laura Moran (Daniel); his 3 step-sons: John Simpson, Joshua Simpson (Carol) and Jacob Simpson (Francois); his long-time partner, Jean Gillon; and his 10 grandchildren, Aidan Hughes, Nuala Ventimiglia, Samuel Ventimiglia, Thomas Moran, Molly Moran, Catherine Moran, Patrick Moran, Cogan Simpson, Reilly Simpson, and Lucia Meyer-Simpson. He is also survived by his sister, Susanne Alexander (Frank) and 2 nephews, Frank Alexander (Susan) and Timothy Alexander. He is predeceased by his wife, Nuala Hughes (1981) and grandson, Johnny Moran (2016). In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Johnny’s Jog for Charity, Inc., P.O.
