Richard Harold Benner, Sr., aged 91, of Toms River, New Jersey passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ. Born in Cranford, NJ on February 18, 1933, Richard was a longtime resident of Cranford before residing in Highlands for three years and then relocating to Toms River 22 years ago. Richard was a devoted husband, proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His outgoing personality often made him the center of attention and beloved figure in his community. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Vivian T. (Delle Donne) Benner; children, Gene Benner (Eileen) Mark Benner (Elizabeth) and Richard Benner, Jr; grandchildren, Melissa Benner (Jay Thorne), Richard Benner, III (Jessica), Nicholas Benner (Deanna), Aimee Benner, Russell Benner (Mallory), Kate Benner (Steve Brengel) and Michael Benner (Arden Cisluycis) Benner and great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Lilly, and Casey. He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Martha Benner; sister Arlene Karaman and her husband Joseph and granddaughter Madison Benner. Richard attended Roselle Park High School, and shortly after, he joined the Navy where he served during the 1950s. His service was distinguished by his earning of the National Defense Medal, reflecting his dedication and patriotism. Following his military service, Richard dedicated his career to the family-owned Benners Auto Body in Cranford, New Jersey. He was also an active supporter of several community organizations, contributing significantly to the local community. In his retirement, Richard was very active in the Holiday City South community in Toms River. He enjoyed playing ping pong, shuffleboard, pool, horseshoes, and cards. Richard also relished his trips to the Casinos in Atlantic City and Mount Airy Resort. Services to honor and celebrate his life will be at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road in Toms River. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday from 2-4:30 PM. The funeral service is 10:00 AM Friday, November 22, 2024, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Gertrude's Cemetery 53 Inman Avenue, Colonia, NJ 07067.
