Although it was her legal name, no one ever referred to her as Lydia. Depending on when you first met her, she may have been Leila, Elizabeth, Liz, Lizzie, or Betty. No matter what you called her, she was quick to treasure your relationship and always considered you a dear friend or family member.
Leila was a loving daughter to Alfred and Lydia Thomas and the proud big sister of Herman. She and Herman remained very close and gathered their families together as often as they could before her passing.
Lizzie attended Newark public schools and graduated from West Side High in 1956. She befriended several classmates during her time there, and they remained lifelong friends who celebrated every milestone and mourned every loss together.
Elizabeth married Fred, the love of her life on April 20, 1958. A little over a year later, she was granted the name Mommy, a title she held near and dear. Betty was an active participant in her children's education in the Franklin Township public school system and was very involved with both the PTA and her local church.
Betty had an amazing memory. She would often stump her friends and family members by asking, "Do you know where we were on this date 14 years ago?" She loved to play games and write poems. She enjoyed various crafts, from weaving macrame and latch hook rugs to creating chocolate candies. She and Fred visited family in Germany and enjoyed vacations in both Hawaii and Florida along with countless day trips.
She is survived by her husband, Friedhart "Fred" Maslo; children, Robert (Elaine) Maslo, Ronald (Gloria) Maslo, and Kimberly (Charles) Oehrlein; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Lydia will be held Saturday, February 12, 2022 from 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River, NJ 08755, preceded by a memorial visitation from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.Quinn-HoppingFH.com for the Maslo family.
