October 12, 2022. Born in Jersey City, she spent a good portion of her childhood in
Asbury Park. In 1950, she married William H. Stewart and remained so for 59 years.
They built a life together in Oakhurst, where they lived for over 63 years till his passing
in 2010.
Lois was dependable and a pillar of strength for many throughout her life. In 1993, after
25 years of service, she retired from the Ocean Township Sewage Authority and
traveled the country with her husband shortly after. She enjoyed doing crossword
puzzles and was an avid reader. She believed how you showed up in the world was
important, evidenced by her years volunteering as a poll worker and twenty years at the
Mercy Center food bank in Asbury; and she thought a broach and earrings could pull
any outfit together. She felt a deep sense of responsibility to her family, many friends,
and the world, and that’s probably why she never let an unpaid bill sit around too long.
Lois experienced much joy in her life and some tough times and worried often, but she
always had a smile and kept going; that’s how many people will remember her. She
touched many lives, and she will be dearly missed.
She was predeceased by her son, John Jay Stewart, in 1968; her parents, a sister,
Patricia Measure, and a brother James Cheeseman. Surviving is her daughter, her
primary caretaker for these last years, Ann E. Mancuso; a son William Bruce Stewart
and his wife, Linda of California. three grandchildren, Deana and her husband Todd
Gunn, Damien Rodgers, and Ashley Stewart; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and
Lyla; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will take place on Thursday, October 20, at Anderson and
Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main Street in Toms River. Visitors are welcome at 11; a
brief service will be at 12. A volunteer at the Mercy Center Food Bank for over 20
years, she felt we had a duty to help those less fortunate than us. In lieu of flowers,
please consider donating to the Mercy Center in her memory if you feel inspired at
