We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Retired Howell Police Officer, Joseph W. Perrone, Badge # 138. He passed away on Monday, March 14, 2011 at Community Medical Center in Toms River. Joe was 55 years old and a twenty five year veteran of the Police Department. He graduated from Central Regional High School. He received an Associate in Science Degree from Ocean County College, a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Trenton State College and a Master of Arts Degree from Seton Hall University. Joseph graduated from the Ocean County Police Academy in 1978 and the Monmouth County Police Academy in 1980, where he was awarded the Academic Leadership Award, as well as a Marksmanship Award. Joe was employed by the Dover Township Police Department as a Community Service Officer from 1977 to 1980. He was hired by the Howell Township Police Department in 1980, where he spent the rest of his career proudly serving the community of Howell Township. Joe also served as the New Jersey State Delegate for Howell PBA Local228; State Vice President for the New Jersey State PBA; Board of Directors for the Critical Response Unit; Chairman for the New Jersey Police Stress Unit; Member of the Monmouth County PBA Conference and a past Chairman. Joe was also the recipient of the Life Saving Award from Howell PBA Local 228 and a certificate of Merit for Exceptional Police Service from the New Jersey State PBA.
Joe took great pride volunteering his time to coach in the Toms River East Little League and the Toms River Basketball Association, where he will always be affectionately known as "Coach Joe". He was an active member of the Toms River High School East Football and Lacrosse Parent Associations. He also devoted time to Ocean of Love.
Joe is survived by his loving wife , Barbara , his sons, Kyle and Gabriel, whom he loved with all his heart and was so very proud of, his sisters: Denise, Patricia and Elizabeth, his brothers: Keith, Kevin, and Dominick, as well as many nieces, nephews and loving friends. He will also be missed by his constant companion, Riley.
Joe lived his life serving others. He was a loving husband, a devoted father and a loyal friend. His gift for making us laugh and smile will live on in the wonderful memories he has given us.
Visitation will be held on Friday March 18, 2011 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St. Toms River. Family and friends can arrive at the funeral home on Saturday 10:15 a.m. to follow in procession to Ocean County Memorial Park for a final farewell at 11:30 a.m. Cremation will be private.
