James Aloysius Sauer passed at home in Beachwood peacefully in his sleep on February 2nd, 2022. He was seventy-two. Jim was a father, grandfather, son, brother, teacher, coach, and poet. He was born in 1949 in Newark to Alice and James Sauer. He lived in Kearny until November 1989 when he moved to Beachwood.
He went to Essex Catholic High School and graduated from Steven’s Institute of Technology with a BA in Biochemistry. He taught Science at Our Lady of the Valley High School in West Orange until he began a career at Verona High School in the early 80s. At Verona he taught Physics, HTML, and was a founding member of the wrestling team. He also did IT and networking at St. Rose High School in Belmar for 10+ years later in life.
Jim was a very intelligent, kind, and conscientious man and was loved by many friends, colleagues, students, and family. He loved art, music and going to concerts especially to see Bruce Springsteen. He read and wrote poetry throughout his life, writing poems daily in his last years. He was an avid reader, always surrounded by the many books consumed throughout his life. He also loved baseball and was a big fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. Jim was survived by his son Jesse, his daughter Nadia, his grandchildren Heidi and Gregory, his siblings Peggy Hadden, Marie Short, Larry Sauer, Greg Sauer, and a large extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial gathering will held at Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Mains Street, Toms River, NJ on March 27, 2022 from 11:00am to 12:30pm.
