James Gillen, 75, of Toms River, loving husband, caring father, brother and uncle, and proud grandfather passed away Saturday evening, August 11, 2012. He will be deeply missed by friends and family. Jim and his wife, Lottie, raised three children in Toms River.
Jim was born in Kearny, NJ on November 2, 1936. He attended Kearny High School, where he graduated in 1956. At Kearny High he was a talented athlete and was selected All-State in soccer. In 2005, Jim was inducted into Kearny High’s Sports Hall of Fame for excellence in soccer. Following high school, Jim served in the Army and did a two-year tour of duty in Europe. For 30+ years, he was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 825, running heavy equipment. Jim was an avid Giants fan and a longtime season ticketholder – and as he got older really enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play sports.
Jim is predeceased by his mother, Catherine, and father, James. He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Lottie (Labarowski); daughter, Linda; his sons and their spouses, James and Laura Gillen, and Ted and Vicki Gillen of Toms River; his sister and her spouse, Ruth and Nick Osifchin; his nieces and nephews, Nicole, Mark, Richard, Tammy, Daria, Adam, Noelle, Todd and Scott; and his five adoring grandchildren, Katie, Abbey, Lizzie, Brady and Jack.
Viewing hours will be from to 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, August 15th at Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main Street, Toms River. A mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 16th at St. Joseph’s Church, 685 Hooper Ave., Toms River. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Toms River.
