Jacob “Jake” Yanoff, 97, of Toms River passed away peacefully at his home on Friday January 19, 2024, surrounded by his children. Jake was born in Long Branch on June 27, 1926 to Morris and Sadie Yanoff. As a young boy, the Yanoff family moved to Newark, where he attended grade school and graduated from South Side High School in December 1943. After graduation Jake attempted to enlist in the Marines at the age of 17 but was told he needed to wait until his 18th birthday. Upon completion of boot camp and infantry training Jake ultimately was shipped out to Iwo Jima, where in March 1945 he was wounded and as a result received the Purple Heart. It was his service and sacrifice as a member of the greatest generation that set the tone for the rest of his life.
Jake worked a number of years as a self-employed distributor of soda and related products. In the early 1960’s he became a Teamster, delivering freight locally throughout New Jersey. Upon his retirement as a Teamster, he worked in a law firm in their mail services department.
In 1951 Jake Married the love of his life Rita (nee Sutter), who sadly passed away in 2007. Jake is survived by his sons Michael and his wife Terry, Steven and his wife Deborah, and a daughter Catherine Rynar (widow of Harold Rynar). He has 8 grandchildren, Natalie Yanoff-Smith (Charles), Michael Yanoff (Heather), Elizabeth Finch (Adam), Zachary Yanoff, Jacob Yanoff (Samantha), Julia Catherine “Katie” DeSanti (Paul), Joseph Yanoff and Scott Rynar. Jake also had 6 great-grandchildren, Nikolas Smith, Vivian Smith, Bryce Yanoff, Addison Yanoff, Sofia Finch, and Mya Abreu. Jake was a surrogate grandfather to many children of his extended family. He was a devoted family man, deeply loved, admired and respected by all.
Jake is also predeceased by two sisters, Molly Rovick and Frances Levy and I survived by a third sister Edna Alexander.
