William I. “Bill” Miller, 87 of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Monday, March 28 at the Waterford Commons in Perrysburg, with the comfort of family at his side. A long-time resident of Point Place, he was born in Petersburg, Michigan on April 7, 1923 to Mr. Roy Miller and Mrs. Caroline (Bickford) Miller. A graduate of Macomber High School, he attended The University of Toledo before enlisting for service to his country in the United States Army, Company 346 Infantry. He was a decorated combat veteran of World War II, taking part in some of the most notorious conflicts of the European campaign. In 1946, Bill married Doris M. Schwellinger, also of Toledo and had recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary together. An automotive engineer, he retired in 1982 following a long and accomplished career with AP Parts Company in Toledo. Bill was an avid motorcyclist and past member of Bay View Yacht Club, having spent many years boating on Lake Erie.
He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Mr. Lewis G. Bailey, and is survived by his loving wife, Doris Miller; children, Marilyn (Alec) Steele of Chelmsford, Massachusetts; Donald (Phyllis) Miller of Mooresville, North Carolina; James (Cindy) Miller of Berkey, Ohio; Janice (Michael) Rafferty of Findlay, Ohio and Dean Miller of Point Place. His nine grandchildren include Ethan and Caitlin Steele, Amanda and Allison Miller, Kelynne and Krystin Miller and Nicholas, Jonathan and Ian Rafferty.
Mr. Miller was laid to rest in the Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, following a private memorial service with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be directed to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 East River Rd. Perrysburg, Ohio 43551.
