James “Jimmy” W. Shipp Sr., age 81 of Toledo, Ohio, passed away with his loving family by his side at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Saturday, August 30, 2014. He was born in Toledo on November 13, 1932 to James and Eva Shipp. James was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. While in the Navy he was a pipefitter and paratrooper, serving on USS Wooster and USS Demoine. He enjoyed telling stories of how he met such people as the Pope, Kurt Douglas and pianist, Floyd Cramer while serving in Italy. James started his career becoming an Ohio State Highway Trooper for 5 years in Akron, later working as a bus driver for TARTA for 33 years. He enjoyed running marathons, playing and coaching softball, watching college football, traveling, bowling and listening to county music. James was an animal lover, especially his dogs, Buddy and Bailey. He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Taylor Worley. Jim is survived by his loving and caring wife, Carol Shipp, children; Sharlene Bittenbender, Patrick (Tanya Styer), James “460 ½” (Laurie) Shipp Jr., Rodney Shipp, Kelley Hufford, Dawn Sanders and James Jr. step-children; Jeff Farrell, Mark (Patty) Farrell, Kathy (Gordon Neal) Farrell, Patricia Gowing, Roger Gowing, Sheila Gowing, Joe Littleton, grandson, Brandon Worley. He also is survived by his sisters, Juanita Mackey and Joyce Riley and extended family and grandkids.
Visitation will be at H. H. Birkenkamp Funeral Home, 3219 Tremainsville Rd (419-473-1301) on Tuesday, September 2 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Funeral services are in the funeral home at 11:00 am on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be given to A.S.P.C.A. or to Wounded Warriors Program.
